Pedestrian-Friendly

Open Spaces & Preserved Wetlands

A large community space is allocated within Legacy Village at Maplewood not only to serve the residents of the Village, but is available to all residents of the surrounding community. This open, green space will feature children's playground equipment and picnic areas. It will be connected to the Village and City trail system for easy pedestrian and bicycle access.

Generous sidewalks, on-street parking, frequent street trees, and integrated street furnishings contribute to the pedestrian-oriented quality of the streets. In addition, streets are considered part of the 'public realm' and designed to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and automobiles, rather than serving simply as automobile travel ways.  All components of Legacy at Maplewood are connected by sidewalks and walking paths.

Numerous wetlands have been delineated on the site and the development proposes upgrading the wetlands to create a true site amenity. The City of Maplewood is currently creating an 11-acre outdoor Sculpture Park within the wetland area. The Park will feature a pergola, seating, boardwalk bridge, walking trails and landscaping.

Several open, publicly-accessible common spaces are planned within Legacy at Maplewood. These spaces include parks and natural resource areas and range from formal parks or green space to undisturbed wetlands or habitat areas. Natural resource areas form a greenbelt of native landscape around the perimeter of the development site and will be protected in their natural state to safeguard ecological processes and wildlife. They also provide for naturalized drainage extending into the development area.

A large open green plaza within the center of the
"town square" provides for recreation, relaxation, and community gathering. A linear park in the center of the development provides a connection between the commercial districts and features pathways and a water feature. Another small park is featured in the center of the traffic circle.  In addition, publicly-accessible commons or shared open space in located within the for-sale townhome development. Most of the area in the southeast remains woods and wetlands.
